Thousands of Russians paid their last respects to Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, who lies in an open coffin.

Most of them said they respected Gorbachev and remembered him as the “peacemaker” who liberated them.

Gorbachev, who led the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991, died last Tuesday (08/30) at the age of 91. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his role in ending the Cold War.

Gorbachev was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow, next to the grave of his wife, Raissa, who died in 1999. But President Vladimir Putin was not present, citing his busy schedule, although he paid tribute last Thursday.

Before being buried, Gorbachev's body lay in state in the Hall of Columns in central Moscow, following the tradition of previous Soviet leaders, including Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin.
