Canadian Prime Minister announces separation from wife

Jakarta

Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau announced that he and his wife, Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, would separate. This decision is a joint decision of both parties.

Reported by AFP, Justin Trudeau and Sophie have been married for 18 years. In a post on Instagram, the Prime Minister said “after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to go our separate ways.”

A statement from his office added that the couple signed a “legal separation agreement.”

The public hopes to continue to see them and their three children together, because “they remain a close family” and both parents will be “always present in their children's lives”.

But they asked for privacy ahead of a family vacation planned for next week.

Trudeau and his wife, a former entertainment journalist, were childhood friends and met again in 2003 while hosting a charity ball together. They quickly began dating and married in 2005 in Montreal.

They have three children together: Xavier (15 years old), Ella Grace (14 years old) and Hadrien, nine years old.

This is the first separation for a Canadian prime minister since Trudeau's late father, Pierre Trudeau, separated from Margaret Trudeau in the late 1970s and ultimately divorced in 1984 during the final months of his mandate.
