Canadian Open: Sindhu and Lakshya Sen in the quarter-finals

Calgary: Indian football stars PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen qualified for the women’s and men’s singles quarter-finals respectively at the Canadian Open Super 500 here on Thursday evening.

Sindhu advanced after her opponent Natsuki Nidaira of Japan gave her a ride. Sen earned a 21-15, 21-11 victory over Brazilian Yegor Coelho in 31 minutes.

Sindhi will face Indonesian 2022 World Masters champion Gao Fangjie, who was instrumental in China’s victory at this year’s Asian Mixed Team Championships.

Sen, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, will face Belgian Julien Carraghi.

However, Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Joud Bangala could not advance past the semi-finals, as they were defeated 9-21, 11-21 by Indonesian second seeds and world number 7 Muhammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.

Sen is slowly finding his way back after going through a bit of a difficult period at the start of the season.

On Thursday, Sin had a tough battle against Coelho, who erased a 0-2 deficit with a four-point burst and then maintained his intensity. The duo went neck and neck until 13-13, when Sin managed to continue and close the match after jumping to 20-15 with a five-point lead.

In the second game, Sen had no problems as he took a 12-2 lead and closed comfortably.
