Badminton News: Team Malaysia managed to secure a place in the mixed team semi-finals of the 2022 Commonwealth Games after pair Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing, Ng Tze Yong, as well as Goh Jin Wei each won the representative match against Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals on Sunday evening (31/7).
Pair No. World No. 9 Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing gave Malaysia the perfect start by beating world No. 143 pair Sachin Dias/Thilini Hendahewa two easy games 21-14 and 21-14.
In the men’s singles match, ranked world No. 44, Ng Tze Yong managed to add points for Malaysia by beating world number 131 Niluka Karunaratne 21-5, 21-14.
In the third match, the women’s singles ranked 53rd in the world. Goh Jin Wei sealed the victory for the Malaysian team by beating Vidara Suhasni Vidanage who had no world ranking in consecutive matches 21-9 and 21-5.
Next, Goh Jin Wei and his friends will face England in the semi-finals of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
In the other quarter-final, England managed to overcome the resistance of Canada with a crushing score of 3-0.
In the mixed doubles match, 2021 European Champions, Marcus Ellis/Luren Smith managed to give his team all the points with wins over Ty Lindeman and Josephine Wu with 21-12, 21-9.
In match two of the men’s singles, Toby Penty managed to earn a hard-fought victory over Brian Young, 21-19, 21-19, before Sean Vendy and Ben Lane finished the quarter-finals in style, beating Adam Dong and Nyl Yakura. with 21-17 and 21-12.
