Who is Donald Pandiangan, the man holding the arrow in today’s Google Doodle?

Jakarta: The Google Doodle on the Google search page reappears today, Monday, December 12, 2022. Interestingly, today’s Gogole Doodle clearly shows an illustration of a man’s face holding a bow.

If you click on Google Doodle or hover the mouse pointer over this section, information will appear in the form of “Donald Pandiangan” who is he?

Google Doodle explains that Donald Pandiangan is a famous Indonesian archery athlete and earned the nickname “Robin Hood”. He managed to collect achievements representing Indonesia as four-time SEA Games champion.

The information collected claims that Donald Pandiangan contributed to 22 gold medals at the SEA Games from 1977 to 1987. What is interesting is that he only learned archery at the age 25 years old but managed to get a gold medal at PON Surabaya 1973.

Donald is married to Paulina Pandiangan and has four children namely Patar Pandiangan, Maria Pandiangan, Lusyana Pandiangan and Aldo Pandiangan. He managed to hold the Indonesian Robin Hood title after competing in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Canada.

Donald Pandiangan was born in Sidikalang, North Sumatra on December 12, 1945 and died at the age of 63 on August 20, 2008 from a stroke. He had been treated at the MH Thamrin International Hospital in Salemba.

The Doodle Catalog YouTube channel video says Donald Pandiangan originally dreamed of becoming an engineer, but financial problems prevented him from completing his studies.

His profession in transportation eventually brought in capital which he used to pursue a career as an archery athlete. Donald Pandiangan is also a coach for the Indonesian female archery athletes, later known as the Three Heroines.

His three students are Nurfitriyana Saiman, Lilies Handayani and Kusuma Wardhani. Initially, Donald refused to take up coaching after being absent from the archery world due to a disappointment with Indonesia, which was canceled to compete in the Olympics.

In 1980, Indonesia boycotted the 1980 Soviet Union Olympics due to the country’s attack on Afghanistan. Donald Pandiangan, who was at the height of his career at the time, said he was angry and disappointed because the dream of winning a gold medal in this event had to be abandoned.

In 2016, a movie was released titled 3 Srikandi which tells the true story of Nurfitriyana Saiman, Lilies Handayani and Kusuma Wardhani and their coach Donald Pandiangan. Here, the three are played by Bunga Citra Lestari, Chelsea Islan and Tara Bastro.

The figure of Donald Pandiangan is interpreted by Reza Rahadian. This film tells the true story of the three struggles to succeed in bringing Indonesia to its first medal in archery at the 1998 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea.
