Donald is married to Paulina Pandiangan and has four children namely Patar Pandiangan, Maria Pandiangan, Lusyana Pandiangan and Aldo Pandiangan. He managed to hold the Indonesian Robin Hood title after competing in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Canada.

The Doodle Catalog YouTube channel video says Donald Pandiangan originally dreamed of becoming an engineer, but financial problems prevented him from completing his studies.
His profession in transportation eventually brought in capital which he used to pursue a career as an archery athlete. Donald Pandiangan is also a coach for the Indonesian female archery athletes, later known as the Three Heroines.

In 1980, Indonesia boycotted the 1980 Soviet Union Olympics due to the country’s attack on Afghanistan. Donald Pandiangan, who was at the height of his career at the time, said he was angry and disappointed because the dream of winning a gold medal in this event had to be abandoned.
In 2016, a movie was released titled 3 Srikandi which tells the true story of Nurfitriyana Saiman, Lilies Handayani and Kusuma Wardhani and their coach Donald Pandiangan. Here, the three are played by Bunga Citra Lestari, Chelsea Islan and Tara Bastro.
The figure of Donald Pandiangan is interpreted by Reza Rahadian. This film tells the true story of the three struggles to succeed in bringing Indonesia to its first medal in archery at the 1998 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea.
