Uber Cup 2024: Wendy Zhang excited to return to her home country

Badminton News: It was a happy homecoming for Wendy Zhang, who helped Canada to their first team win today in the Uber Cup, with the 21-year-old collecting Yue Yann Jaslyn Hooi's third point.

Canada won the match with a score of 5-0. It was her first tournament in her country of birth, Wendy Zhang was blown away by the atmosphere and loved hearing people call her by her Chinese name.

“I have never won a match. This is my first victory and of course I am happy to have scored a point for my team, and we are happy to beat Singapore,” Zhang said.

“My parents are here, some of my relatives from other provinces have come to watch over me. I'm happy to win in front of them and make them proud.”

“It's my first time playing in a tournament in China, so I'm very happy. I could hear people shouting my Chinese name, so it was pretty impressive. I'm not really used to crowds in stadiums, it's difficult to hear the birds. It's hard to play sometimes, but it's great to see badminton growing and people watching and learning about the sport.”

“When I first arrived I was quite nervous, but once the match started I got into the game quite quickly and I tend to forget that there are so many people watching. Good Sure, it was intimidating – there were so many people watching badminton on all four courts!

Wendy Zhang was born in Kunming and moved to Canada when she was in fourth grade. He played badminton recreationally while growing up in China, but it became serious after his family moved to Canada.

“I come from a very high province, so you can’t play badminton there. I played recreationally with my parents, learned simple things (the basics) but nothing serious until I moved to Canada. I resumed training in China during the summer holidays, but not recently.

What are his memories of the Uber Cup?

“Getting to know my teammates; we don't really know each other very well. Some of them are juniors who came to play with us because some of our (main) players were injured. It is therefore important to know each other, encourage each other and have a team atmosphere. It was a fun tournament.
