The Quebec Separatist Party calls for the separation of Canada from the British Empire

The leader of the Bloc Québécois, Yves-François Blanchet, judged on Wednesday (10/26) loyalty to foreign sovereigns not only outdated, but also costly.

“The recent changing of the guard in Britain is an opportunity for Quebecers and Canadians to free themselves from decaying monarchical relations,” Blanchet said as published. Reuters.

Today, Canada is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations of the former British Empire, which recognizes a king or queen as head of state.

The transfer of power to King Charles III following the Queen’s death on September 8 caused much political upheaval within the Commonwealth of Nations.

The state of Quebec was the most vocal in expressing its constitutional separation from England because, according to poll results, its residents felt they did not have a close relationship with the monarchy.

To sever its ties with Britain, Canada would have to amend its constitution, with the support of at least seven provincial legislatures representing more than 50 percent of the population, plus Parliament.

Although many would like Canada not to be governed by a foreign monarch, there has so far been little political will for constitutional reform.
