Bisnis.comJAKARTA – Induk Facebook, Meta has decided to block access to news content for Facebook and Instagram users in Canada.
Launch Tech Crunch, Sunday (6/25/2023), kThis decision was made after the Canadian Senate approved the online information bill on Thursday (22/6/2023).
“We can confirm that the availability of information will end on Facebook and Instagram for our users in Canada before the Online News Act [Bill C-18] applies,β Meta wrote in a statement.
Business has repeatedly stated that, to comply with Bill C-18, content from media outlets, including publishers and news broadcasters, will no longer be accessible to users accessing these platforms in Canada.
The reason is that Meta is strongly against participation Online Information Act since the bill was first submitted to the Senate in 2021.
In 2021, Meta even threatened to block news content in Canada unless the Senate was willing to amend the controversial bill.
Meta's attitude became even more serious when the company tested limiting news access to some of its social media users in Canada.
Meanwhile, aThe Online News Act requires news and social media platforms such as Google and Facebook to negotiate commercial deals and pay news publishers for their content.
Once the Online Information Act has been approved by the Senate, approval of the Act will be sought from the Governor General as a final step for ratification.
Besides Facebook, Google has also expressed similar attitudes and actions. The tech giant also blocked access to news content for some of its users in Canada.
