Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Canada was ordered to summon Russia’s ambassador to Canada, Oleg Stepanov, following a series of “hateful” attacks againstLGBTQincluding one directed against a Canadian minister who openly declared herself a lesbian.
Embassy Russia In Ottawa, Canada has posted anti-LGBTQ messages on Twitter in recent days, after Russian lawmakers approved a law banning all forms of LGBTQ “propaganda.”
“It is not surprising that Russia has once again chosen hate propaganda,” said Emily Williams, deputy director of communications for Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, in a statement reported by the news agency . AFPTuesday (11/29/2022).
“This is an attack on Canada’s values of acceptance and tolerance. Minister Joly has ordered Global Affairs Canada to summon the Russian ambassador to tell him all this,” Williams added.
The Russian Embassy’s tweet was accompanied by a photo depicting a rainbow flag covered with a red outline inside a red circle, indicating that it is prohibited, as well as the caption : “It’s all about family. The family is made up of men, women and children.”
Russian Embassy also hit back at Canadian Sports Minister Pascale St-Onge, who is openly lesbian, after she opposed “Russian homophobic propaganda”, asking her to “explore and explain how you arrived in this world?”
