It was previously reported that the Joe Biden administration plans to formally ask Congress to approve a $1.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan, which includes 60 anti-ship missiles and 100 air-to-air missiles.
city of PoliticsOn Wednesday (8/31), the news broke as China continued to send warships and planes to the Taiwan Strait every day, days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, an island she says is part of China, and condemned Beijing’s efforts to bully Taiwan.
In response to Pelosi’s visit, China staged an unprecedented large-scale military exercise. The exercises took place around Taiwan and there were missile launches around Taiwan.
Once the Biden administration officially confirms the notification, the Democratic and Republican chairmen of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House Foreign Relations Committee will need to approve the sale before the official sale is finalized.
US lawmakers will likely approve this sale, but the process could be long and drawn out, given the ongoing parliamentary recess.
On this, the committee representatives of both parties did not immediately respond and comment much.
This was done by Joe Biden as part of the United States’ commitment to supporting Taiwan and the sustainability of democracy in Taiwan, after US lawmakers successively traveled to Taiwan for a visit in August 2022.
