The name of the video communication device is Wehead, and it was created by technology company Zero Distance. In short, the device that was recently exhibited at the Consumer Electronic Show 2023 in Las Vegas can present distant interlocutors in three dimensions.
This device can be easily connected to a standard computer or smartphone webcam and presents three-dimensional images in real time. Uniquely, this device, for example, can move with the movement of the person talking to it.
If the other person’s head moves to the left, Wehead will move to the left. If it moves to the right, Wehead does the same.
In principle, says Zero Distance founder Iliya Sedoshkin, the device is as if the person you’re talking to is near you.
“You can use anything, a smartphone, tablet or laptop and a conventional web camera. It has a face tracking feature, so you can move your face, head, right or left , and it will mimic it. The movements seem to create impressions as if the other person is present at point-blank range,” he explained.
Sedoskhin boasted that this tool can overcome the loneliness of those who are now forced to work from home.
“For people who spend 40 hours a week working from home, they don’t often see their co-workers in person. It feels like they’re right next to you and using the same space. This can reduce the loneliness of working alone,” he continues.
The Wehead is not a cheap device. The pro type is offered for almost $5,000. You can talk for 3 hours with this tool without having to recharge the battery.
Zero Distance isn’t the only company developing space communication devices. ARHT Media, a technology company from Toronto, Canada, has also been offering similar technology since 2020. Unlike Wehead, the speaker of the ARHT Media device comes in the form of a hologram. [ab/uh]
