F1 News: Canadian racer Nicholas Latifi wants to emulate the footsteps of Williams teammate Alex Albon. After being expelled from the first team, Latifi first wants to try his luck as a reserve driver.
As it is known, Nicholas Latifi, who has not performed well this season, was finally kicked out of the Williams team next season. So far, Latifi hasn’t found a new team to champion in the upcoming 2023 season. Latifi herself then started looking for options to make her comeback. One path that crossed his mind was to become a reserve driver first, then he caught the attention of the teams from there to be recruited as a main driver again. This step was actually taken by Albon in 2021.
“The only way I would consider being third is the most realistic way to get back on the Formula 1 grid, although I have my doubts about that. Last year Alex did it, so it was possible (for Albon). I feel he is in a different situation with Red Bull,” Latifi said in an interview.
“Personally, I would probably just be a substitute driver with no clear path back (to Formula 1). It’s not something I want to do because being a substitute driver is not the long-term career I want. If I can’t find a suitable position for next year, there’s a chance I’ll be out for a year for a better opportunity next season. There are a lot of options open,” he said.
