Elshinta.com – Mexico announced its bid to host the 2036 Olympics on Wednesday, more than half a century ago after hosting the first Summer Olympics.
“We are beginning the stage to host the 2036 Olympics again,” Mexican Olympic Committee President Maria Jose Alcala said during a press conference with Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.
Ebrard described Mexico as a “sporting powerhouse”, noting that success would make Mexico the first country to host a third FIFA World Cup in 2024, alongside the United States and Canada.
“Our goal is to bring the Olympics to Mexico in 2036, or if that doesn’t work out in 2040,” he said, adding that the proposed venue for the main event had yet to be decided.
“Cities can’t adapt to the Olympics. Large facilities shouldn’t be built when they’re not in use. They have to be transformed – the Olympics have to be adapted to the city,” Ebrard said.
The bid will be the second time the Latin American nation has hosted the Summer Olympics.
The 1968 Olympics were held in Mexico City, a city located 2,240 meters above sea level.
Besides Mexico, Egypt and Indonesia are among the countries that have also expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics, alongside the mayor of Istanbul.
