Tennis News: This week, Leylah Annie Fernandez became Tennis Canada’s 2022 Player of the Year and Women’s Singles Player of the Year.
The 20-year-old finished her 2022 season 21-15, which included defending the title in Monterrey. The tennis player’s best Grand Slam achievement came at Roland Garros after reaching the quarter-finals (lost to Martina Trevisan).
After winning both awards, the 2021 US Open runner-up expressed his joy on social media where he also pointed out that 2022 had been a difficult season for him.
“Proud to be Canadian. Once again, thank you for all of your support. This season has been a tough season, but it’s not about how many times you fall, it’s about how many times you get up,” Annie Fernandez wrote on Instagram.
Tennis Canada President and CEO, Ichael Downey, congratulated all the recipients, including Felix Auger Aliassime in the men’s category.
“We would like to congratulate everyone who received the Tennis Canada Awards of Excellence. The 2022 season has seen our athletes and our organization reach new heights on and off the field. Of course, having helped the Canadian team win the Davis Cup title for the first time and win four ATP tournament titles, Felix deserves recognition in the singles category,” said Downey.
Meanwhile, Downey believes Annie Fernandez is one of the most talented tennis players in women’s tennis.
“On the women’s side, Leylah continues to show her talent and prove that she is one of the most talented tennis players in the WTA tournament,” added Downey.
The Canadian has had a rocky start to her 2022 season after winning just one game in two tournaments during her hard-court season in Australia. He bounced back to the next tournament by winning the title in Monterrey. That slick form continued in Indian Wells as they advanced to the fourth round, but he failed to sustain it in Miami.
After that, she won two of the four matches she played in Rome and Madrid, then went even further at Roland Garros by advancing to the quarter-finals. But he’s been through something pretty bad. After the match, it was discovered that he had a third-degree fracture in his right foot, which forced him to miss the entire grass-court season.
Annie Fernandez returned to action in her home tournament, the Rogers Cup, and lost in the second round. After that, he struggled enough to find his best form, so he was knocked out early from Cincinnati and the US Open. He ended the 2022 season with a win and a loss in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
