Tennis News: Canadian tennis player, Leylah Annie Fernandez started the 2023 season with a landslide victory after playing the ASB Classic in Auckland.
The 2021 US Open finalist dominated as she secured a 6-1, 6-1 win over 15-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtova in the first round of the ASB Classic.
The third seed needed just 61 minutes to beat the Czech national who entered the ASB Classic using a wildcard.
The Canadian tennis player knocked down three of the top 5 players, including defending champion, Naomi Osaka, en route to the 2021 US Open final before losing to British tennis player, Emma Raducanu, who will also compete in Auckland in the 2023 season.
The 20-year-old says life has been difficult since her appearance in the US Open final as it raised expectations for her performance.
“It’s always been more difficult, both mentally and emotionally, because you don’t really know what the future holds and you have big dreams, and then sometimes you fall and it feels like it’s is the end of your journey.” says Annie Fernandez.
“I try not to think about the past and only think about the present and keep moving forward. One of my goals is to be more consistent, go further in tournaments and see my level physically, mentally and technically.
Czech tennis player Tereza Martincova or Austrian tennis player Julia Grabher are waiting for Annie Fernandez in the second round of the ASB Classic.
In the quarterfinals, Annie Fernandez has the potential to meet her compatriot, Rebecca Marino.
Seeded eighth, Marino had to give his best before eliminating Hungarian tennis player Dalma Rebeka Galfi 6-3, 7-6. In the second round, the Canadian national will face the Belgian national, Ysaline Bonaventure.
Bonaventure, who made it through the qualifying rounds, struggled to earn a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over American tennis player Catherine McNally.
Chinese tennis player Lin Zhu also advanced to the second round after beating sixth seed Madison Brengle 4-6 7-6 6-4. Then he will face one of Brengle’s compatriots, namely Venus Williams or Katie Volynets.
