Tennis News: Julian Alonso has joined Leylah Annie Fernandez’s coaching staff and the former world number 30 is excited about the tennis player’s work ethic and potential.
Alonso is currently the coach of Arantxa Rus and previously worked with Sabine Lisicki, Ajla Tomljanovic and Nicolas Almagro.
He will work closely with Canadian father, Jorge Fernandez, while continuing to work closely with Rus, although the partnership will no longer be full as he will have an assistant to assist the Dutch national.
After working with the 20-year-old for several weeks, Alonso has praised his new protege.
“We are talking about someone with an impeccable work ethic,” commented 45-year-old coach Alonso of Annie Fernandez.
“If I say that we will train at 7 a.m., at 6:40 a.m. he has already warmed up. He is very professional, I had some nice surprises.
“In the field, I met a knight, everything you told him, he proved it, he was not afraid, he faced everything with determination. He never seems to get tired, he has an impressive ability to suffer and adapt.”
Meanwhile, the world number 40 has had its ups and downs as he won the title in Monterrey and reached the semi-finals in Indian Wells.
After that, the 2021 US Open finalist qualified for the French Open quarter-finals, but injured her leg beating Italian Martina Trevisan and was forced to miss several months. Although he was back in action ahead of the US Open, he struggled to regain his full fitness.
However, Alonso believes positive results will come.
“This season he got injured at Roland Garros, otherwise I think he could get into the top 10 before coming back to the US Open final. The positive thing is that he doesn’t feel too overdone with the ranking issue, that’s what surprised me the most,” added Alonso.
“Her father thinks Leylah is in training and will need time to reach her maximum level of play. They are very confident in the process, their confidence goes beyond the results obtained. If we train well, the results will come.
“Our goal is to finish next season very high, but not obsessed with numbers. He wants to compete and be among the best players, which is normal for someone who has been in the top 15.”
“After a few months of absence, it’s still complicated. The break after Roland-Garros hurt him, so now all he wants is to be competitive again. We haven’t spoken yet. of a ranking target, but getting into the top 10 would still be there with the potential it has.”
