In Indonesia, goldfish including being loved to eat or being a pet. But in other countries, like the United States, Britain and Canada, the population is growing and creating its own anxiety.

The reason, goldfish is considered a pest. The larger the population of goldfish in the lake, the greater the concern that aquatic plants will grow and impact native species. For example, native species have become starved due to the invasion of goldfish.

“All goldfish are basically invasive species around the world. Across North America, Australia, parts of Europe, they’re very widespread,” said Przemek Bajer, an academic at the University. of Minnesota. Here are some stories of goldfish anxiety:

the United States of America

Not long ago in Burnsville, Minnesota, a giant goldfish was discovered in Lake Keller. The authority fish is called a giant because, unlike in an aquarium or otherwise, this goldfish can grow up to 38 centimeters.

While goldfish kept in home aquariums usually only grow to about 2 inches. It is suspected that the goldfish was carelessly disposed of by the residents who originally kept it.

The city’s local government has also warned residents not to do so because goldfish can contribute to the degradation of water quality by ruffling sediment and uprooting plants.

“Please do not release pet goldfish into ponds or lakes. They grow bigger than you think and contribute to poor water quality,” they wrote on Twitter, along with of a photo of the giant goldfish.

Canada

In the city of Ontario, it has been observed that there are many ponds filled with thousands of goldfish which are considered dangerous pests because they prey on local species and destroy their habitat. In the Great Lakes, goldfish numbers have skyrocketed since 2015, according to ecologist Jennifer Bowman of the Royal Botanical Gardens.

“It’s only getting worse now. These goldfish are very successful if they’re together. A few goldfish in a pond could be thousands next year,” he said, as quoted by CBC’s detikINET .

To deal with it safely, currently being formulated in several ways. Solutions include lowering the water depth level or using certain chemicals.

But the use of chemicals can kill all species in the waters, not just goldfish. If such a measure is taken, it is necessary to add more native species to the target waters.
