George Russell wins Canadian F1 GP pole – BeritaKaltim.Co

BERITAKALTIM.CO – Mercedes driver George Russell took pole position for the 2024 Formula 1 (F1) Canadian Grand Prix (GP) at the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit in Montreal after being the fastest in the qualifying session , Sunday (9/6/2024) WIB.

Russell, who began to find the right formula for his car by becoming third fastest on the third day of free practice on Saturday (8/6), continued his positive performance by clocking 1 minute 12 seconds to lead the race in Montreal with 70 laps on Monday (10/6) at 01:00 WIB.

In second position, there is the Red Bull driver who has been the king of the Canadian GP for the last two editions, namely Max Verstappen who achieved exactly the same time as Russell. However, as Verstappen set his time on the final lap of Q3, pole was still in the hands of the 26-year-old British driver.

“Oh, amazing. “It’s really good, really delicious!” Russell said, as quoted on the official F1 website on Sunday.

“There was a lot of hard work at the factory to achieve this. We said it in Monaco, we hope that this is the start of something for our season, and I think that is true. I miss that feeling,” he added.

After winning pole, Russell is now aiming for his second F1 victory after the 2022 Brazilian GP at the Jose Carlos Pace Autodrome, Sao Paolo.

“It’s incredible here. Every time we come to Montreal, there is good energy from all the fans. I’m excited for tomorrow. “Of course the first step has been taken, but now we are aiming for this victory,” said Lewis Hamilton’s teammate.

Meanwhile, in third place is the McLaren driver who won the Miami GP, Lando Norris with a time difference of 0.021 seconds slower.

In fourth position was Norris’ partner Oscar Piastri and in fifth position RB Honda RBPT rider Daniel Ricciardo who created a surprise.

On the other hand, qualifying in Montreal was a difficult day for Ferrari, who in the previous race had achieved a double podium at the Monaco GP with Charles Lecrerc as winner.

The Ferrari duo of Leclerc and Carlos Sainz failed to make it past Q2, so they both had to settle for starting the Canadian GP race in P11 and P12.
