Fired by Inter Miami, Phil Neville joins the Canadian national team

Soccer News: Phil Neville has joined the coaching staff of the Canadian men’s team to assist head coach John Herdman, Canada Soccer announced on Friday (06/09), a week after the Englishman was fired by Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.

Phil Neville, a former Manchester United player who previously coached the England women’s team, joined Inter Miami in 2021 but was sacked after a run of 10 defeats and five wins, which left them bottom of the table. Eastern Conference standings.

Richard Shaw, who played for Crystal Palace and Coventry City and held youth coaching roles at Crystal Palace and Watford, has also joined Herdman’s staff, according to a release from Canada Soccer.

“Phil and Richard bring with them experience winning at the highest level and have worked with some of the best managers in the major leagues during their careers,” Herdman said.

“They will work as position and unit coaches with the goal of helping us win our first trophy in over two decades.”

Canada’s next match is against Panama on June 15 in the CONCACAF Nations League final. Victory would take them to the final, where they would face either the United States or Mexico in a bid to win their first trophy in 23 years.

Inter Miami itself has been the subject of conversation in recent days after the official signing of Lionel Messi, the MLS club beat out competition from clubs Barcelona and Saudi Arabia to secure Messi’s signature.
