Tennis News: Canadian tennis player Felix Auger Aliassime once lost to Alex Molcan less than a season ago in Marrakech.
Meeting in the second round of the Australian Open, Melbourne 2023 season, the third seed managed to avoid being trailed 0-2 in their head to head.
The 22-year-old battled her way back after losing the opening two sets before earning a 3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Molcan at Margaret Court Arena.
“At one point, I was just trying to spend a little more time on the pitch, in front of all of you,” Auger Aliassime said.
“I’m trying to find a way to make the matches harder and longer. When I was able to win the third set, I gained confidence in myself. My thoughts remain positive. I thought to myself: ‘OK, I’ve done this before, maybe I can come back and win’. But I feel really happy that I was able to finish it. It was a difficult day for me.
Slovak Molcan dominated the first two sets and the start of the third with variety and precision, while the Canadian committed 39 unforced errors in the first three sets.
However, the world No. 7’s stunning serve helped turn the tide before taking a 5-3 lead for the first time in the game. Before the decisive match, he had not created a chance for a break point.
“The numbers showed it, but he was just more consistent than me in the first two sets, which left me struggling,” Auger Aliassime continued. “I have to find a way to keep playing the way I want to, but without making too many mistakes. It’s quite simple. I was just trying to put one more ball in the field, keep it simple, make them work, and I’m relieved that it led to success.”
For a place in the fourth round of the Australian Open, Auger Aliassime will face 28th seed Francisco Cerundolo, who silenced Frenchman Corentin Moutet 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 .
Meanwhile, Yoshihito Nishioka has booked his Australian Open third round match against American tennis player Mackenzie McDonald after the Japanese national knocked out Czech national Dalibor Svrcina 6-3, 6-4, 6- 2.
