Badminton News: Despite post-European Games blues and exhaustion, several athletes who were in Poland last week joined other players from Europe and around the world in Calgary, Canada, to compete in the YONEX Canada Open 2023.
After two days of the tournament, European players produced an exceptional performance in the first round of the main draw.
Julien Carraggi continued his incredible year of achievements with an impressive performance at the 2023 YONEX Canada Open.
After passing two qualifying rounds, the Belgian faced the Japanese Kanta Tsuneyama, currently 14th in the world. Carraggi emerged victorious with a three-game victory, 21-16, 19-21 and 21-15.
Moving to the round of 16, he will face Israeli Misha Zilberman, with a chance to advance to the quarter-finals to secure a medal in his Super 500 tournament debut.
In another sensational upset, Germany’s Fabian Roth scored a resounding victory against two-time world champion Kento Momota. Roth won against his Japanese opponent in straight matches, 21-17 and 21-16.
The road ahead will certainly not be easy as he will face China’s Li Shi Feng today in the round of 16.
Jan Louda, who was playing his opening match in the main draw, started well against China’s Weng Hong Yang. The Czech player won in consecutive matches, 22-20 and 21-12.
Today, Louda will face world number 4 Kodai Naraoka of Japan in the round of 16 of the 2023 Canada Open.
