Liputan6.com, Ottawa – Canada said it would grant temporary visas to 5,000 Gaza residents under a special program.
This visa is a priority for those living in the war zone in Gaza, mentioned on the page Japan today, Thursday (30/5/2024).
The number is up from the previous 1,000 visas, the Canadian Immigration Department said in a statement.
“While it is not possible to leave Gaza at this time, the situation can change at any time. With this increased limit, we will be ready to assist more people as the situation evolves,” said Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller.
In fact, it is very difficult for people to leave Gaza and it depends on Israel’s approval.
In one of the latest attacks, an Israeli airstrike sparked a massive fire that killed 45 people in a tent camp in the Gaza city of Rafah. It subsequently sparked protests from world leaders.
Canada has shared the names of Gaza residents who have passed initial screening with local authorities to secure their exit.
A spokesperson for Canada’s immigration department said 448 Gazans had been granted temporary visas, including 254 on the basis of public policies, and 41 people had arrived in Canada so far.
