Badminton News: Canada proved its supremacy at the continental level in the men’s and women’s team competitions at the 2024 Pan Am M&F Badminton Cup which concluded in Sao Paolo on Sunday (18/2) local time.
Team Canada beat Brazil 3-0 on the men’s side and had a similar victory over the United States on the women’s side, keeping a clean sheet all week.
While the men’s team won all 21 of their matches, the women’s team went undefeated in 16 matches during the week.
Nonetheless, Canada was tested by Brazil in the men’s team final, with the entire match consisting of three close matches. Brian Yang, who was in top form, took 53 minutes to reduce Ygor Coelho’s challenge before Dong Adam/Nyl Yakura made it 2-0, beating Brazilian pair Fabricio Farias/Davi Silva 21- 12, 16-21 and 21-18.
Victor Lai got the winning point by defeating Jonathan Matias in a close match with a score of 24-22, 13-21, 21-19.
Earlier in the semi-final, Canada managed to beat Mexico 3-0 while Brazil won a resounding victory against Guatemala, who bowed out of the tournament.
The women’s team had a relatively easier final against the United States. Wen Yu Zhang was beaten three games in the women’s first singles by Esther Shi, but Catherine Choi/Josephine Wu in the women’s doubles and Rachel Chan in the second singles each won consecutive matches against Joline Su/Kerry Xu and also Ella Lin.
In the semifinals, the United States beat Brazil 3-0 and Canada beat Peru by the same margin.
