Canada beat Italy in Davis Cup semi-finals –

Tennis News: Canada will face Australia on the best night of the 2022 Davis Cup season to be held in Malaga after, for the second time in a row, they came back to claim victory.

Canadian tennis player Felix Auger Aliassime beat Italian national Lorenzo Musetti to equalize after his compatriot Denis Shapovalov lost to Lorenzo Sonego. Victory was therefore to be determined by a doubles match.

In the dying minutes, Auger Aliassime replaced Shapoalov in the doubles match and Italy international Matteo Berrettini also made a surprise appearance to replace injured compatriot Simone Bolelli.

The Rotterdam Open champion for the 2022 season is very happy to have been chosen to play the decisive match.

“We know we can make changes if we need to. The whole team is connected to this idea, the main objective is to win the trophy, there is no ego and it’s a great feeling,” said Auger Aliassime.

The doubles match was fierce and the Canadians looked sharp in both sets, but the final drama came towards the end.

Italy held on at 4-4 from 0/30 and came back from 0/40 to 5-5 at 30/40. But a combination of play between Berrettini who was injured earlier this week and his compatriot Fabio Fognini created the chance for Vasek Pospisil’s Canada to win 7-6 7-5.

Earlier, Auger Aliassime put in a stunning performance to thwart Musetti 6-3, 6-4 and ensured the game was to be decided in doubles.

Both players equalized from the baseline, but the 2022 Basel champion’s serve often failed to return Musetti and he fired the decisive shot when it was necessary to return the Italian’s serve.

Early in the match, Italy took a 1-0 lead after a tense match between Shapovalov and Sonego. After fighting for almost 3 hours, the Italian tennis player won 7-6, 6-7, 6-4.

Ultimately, there was no redemption for Italy this time around, but they will certainly be back in contention for the Davis Cup title in the future.

Meanwhile, for Canada and Australia, they are risking it all at the top end with both teams believing they can and will win.
