Tennis News: Switzerland have successfully qualified for the semi-finals of the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup Final in Galsgow after Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic posted wins.
Golubic put Switzerland in a positive position after battling hard to beat Canadian Bianca Andreescu 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and were followed by Bencic who crippled Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-0, 7 -5, thus ensuring the superiority of Switzerland.
After the two teams achieved an impressive 3-0 against Italy in the first two matches, the meeting between the two teams became a crucial match with a place in the semi-finals of the Billie Jean King Cup final against the United States or the Czechs to stake.
Early in the match, Andreescu hit Golubic’s second serve in every round, which made it difficult for him to play beautifully into the net. The Swiss needed until game seven to hold their ground and after the 2019 US Open champion won the first set, the crowd was convinced that Canada would have a strong chance of claiming victory.
Golubic had to warm up and he started the second set by breaking Andreescu early in the set and then solidifying his lead by defending his own serve. After a few games, he made the match different, neutralizing the Canadian’s weapons, protecting his own serve more effectively, before leveling the set.
Going into the third set, the game of the Swiss tennis player was improving, while that of the Canadian tennis player was even more embellished with errors. The combination allowed the Swiss to extend their lead before presenting the first victory for Switzerland in the game against Canada.
“I started the match a little nervous and passive,” admits Golubic. “It wasn’t too bad, but still, it was bad enough for him to claim a set so easily. I knew I had to really raise the level of my game.”
Golubic’s win paved the way for the Tokyo Olympic champion to renew their rivalry with Annie Fernandez. Previously, they had faced each other three times and the Canadian had won 2-1.
Still, the Swiss won their last encounter a few weeks ago in Guadalajara and entered the Billie Jean King Cup final this week by winning the first set without losing a single game.
A different story happened in the second set which was more competitive after Annie Fernandez raised the level of the game and pushed the Swiss tennis player to the limit. But the Swiss found a solution and emerged victorious after 1:29.
“The first set was absolutely amazing,” Bencic said. “I felt like I couldn’t miss a single ball. But of course he fought back. So I’m ready for a tough game. Of course, I felt a bit stuck towards the end, but I think it’s It was because I cared a lot about myself and really wanted to win.”
