Badminton News: Monday night, the YONEX Canada Open 2022 kicks off in Calgary. Along with the many Canadian players looking to use their home tournaments to rack up world ranking points, some European players will also be looking to make an impact on Canadian soil.
The biggest name in this tournament has to be three-time world champion Carolina Marin of Spain. After suffering another horrific knee injury in 2021 that ruled him out for eleven months of competition, Marin is still on a comeback mission to return to the top of the world rankings. And the six-time back-to-back European champion hopes to take another step in the right direction in Canada:
“Canada Open, that’s it! Ready to give his best this week,” he captioned an Instagram video showing his preparations on the pitch.
Several French, Spanish, Danish and German players will be competing in Calgary this week. Most of them had already played their first round yesterday. Israel’s Misha Zilberman (#3 lead, MS) along with Arnaud Merkle (#4 lead, MS) and France’s Qi Xuefei (#5 lead, WS) all won their first matches in Canada.
Carolina Marin does indeed use a lot of lower level tournaments as part of the warm up before high level tournaments to build confidence. For example, in 2019, after recovering from an ACL injury in 2018, the Spanish queen of badminton made a comeback at the 2019 Vietnam Open before successfully defending her prestigious title at the Vietnam Open two weeks later. 2019 China Open beating Tai Tzu Ying in the final. .
