Alonso: Esteban Ocon’s 2021 Hungarian GP win was just a coincidence

Ligasports.com –

F1 News: Fernando Alonso recently hinted that his former team-mate Esteban Ocon’s win at the Hungaroring last season was a fluke.

Esteban Ocon surprised people with his performance at the Hungaroring last year. He managed to take advantage of the chaos of the first round caused by Valtteri Bottas.

The French rider held off Sebastian Vettel’s lead to present Alpine’s first victory since 203 years ago. Ocon took the top step of the podium after Fernando Alonso fought to protect him from Lewis Hamilton’s attack.

But almost a year and a half after that proud moment, Alonso actually laughed at his former teammate’s victory. Their relationship is known to have started to heat up since the brushing incident during the Brazilian Grand Prix sprint race.

“We didn’t win because what happened in Hungary last year won’t happen again in a hundred years, so it was a sacrifice,” Crash quoted Alonso as saying.

“And then the podium, maybe in Canada and Australia we had chances but we lost because of our own mistakes. But when you’re not fighting for the championship, being fourth or fifth doesn’t change not much,” he continued.

In the end, Esteban Ocon managed to beat Alonso in the final 2022 F1 Driver’s Classification. It was the first time the driver had surpassed his partner since making his debut in the main class in 2016.

As of next year, Ocon will join forces with Pierre Gasly. Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso has bolstered Aston Martin with Lance Stroll.
