Facebook blocks news content in Canada and Indonesia

Bisnis.com, SOLO – Owned social media Meta, Facebookmade a serious decision to block content news for users of Canada.

Facebook is keeping its word by blocking news content in the form of text, photos and videos in Canada.

This blockage is the result of the “Online News Act” regulation passed by the Canadian government at the end of last June.

In this regulation, online platforms such as Facebook and Google must pay compensation to media companies as producers of information content distributed via the Internet network.

This regulation objected to Meta and requested a discussion on this regulation involving an objective and independent institution.

Facebook said the blocking action had to be taken because it could not meet the requested compensation policy.

They admitted that the platform’s advertising revenues have declined over the past two years, following the increasingly massive growth of online services.

“Users in Canada can no longer access news links and content uploaded by news and broadcasting companies. We identify media companies based on legislative definitions and guidelines in the News Act online”, reads Meta’s official statement, cited by Engadget, Wednesday (2/8/2023).

The blocking does not only affect news from local Canadian media, news from international sites is also blocked by Facebook.

Canadian authorities say the online news law is an effort to bring justice to media companies.

On the other hand, almost similar regulations are also being prepared by Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) through the “Publisher Rights” Regulation.

The “publishers’ rights” policy is still under discussion within the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) and the institutions concerned.
