India expels dozens of Canadian diplomatic staff, gives deadline until October 10

Government India give time to Canada until October 10 to reduce the number of its diplomatic staff in the country. This is intended to ensure that the number of Canadian diplomatic staff is equivalent to the number of Indian diplomats currently in Ottawa.

Initial reports put the number of Canadian diplomatic staff invited to leave India at 41. However, several sources have been contacted CTV News said the request was only intended to meet balance requirements.

Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian government department in charge of diplomatic and consular relations, had previously said that “with several diplomats receiving threats on various social media platforms”, authorities in Ottawa were “assessing the availability of its personnel in India” .

“As a result, and out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to temporarily adjust the presence of personnel in India,” Global Affairs Canada said in a statement, days after the Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau accusing the Indian government of being involved in murders on Canadian territory.

On Thursday (10/05) local time, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told local reporters that discussions regarding the deadline for diplomatic staff to leave New Delhi were “ongoing.”
