Football News: Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie helped Nigeria secure a valuable 0-0 draw against Olympic champions Canada in their Women's World Cup opener on Friday (21/07).
Christine Sinclair was brought down in the area by Francisca Ordega, penalty awarded by VAR.
Nnadozie saved a penalty in the 50th minute at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, denying Sinclair to his left. The Canadian captain failed to become the first player to score in six editions of the Women's World Cup.
Both teams have one point each, trailing Group B leaders Australia by two points following the hosts' 1-0 win over Ireland on Thursday (20/07).
Both teams had their chances in this match, but Sinclair, who was taken off in the 70th minute, was perhaps the most frustrated. He failed to capitalize on a good chance by firing a shot wide in the ninth minute.
Another Canadian chance presented itself when substitute Evelyne Viens should have headed towards the penalty area, but instead sent the volley straight into Nnadozie's arms.
Nigeria's defense was almost impenetrable against Canada in the second half, they defended tooth and nail to hold off Canada until the end of the match.
After the final whistle, Nnadozie knelt down and raised his fists to celebrate the point.
Nigeria's joy was not up to par after midfielder Deborah Abiodun was shown a red card in stoppage time. He will miss the next match against Australia.
Canada dominated possession, but was unable to capitalize on its dominance to create goals.
