Relations between China and Canada have deteriorated since 2015.

Trudeau’s first term promised to improve relations between Canada and China.

However, relations between Canada and China broke down in December 2018 when China imprisoned Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, who are Canadian citizens in China.

This was done after Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou who was a Chinese telecommunications executive at the request of the United States.

Since then, Trudeau and members of his cabinet have increasingly publicly criticized China.
