The mystery behind the batik colors of heads of state at the G20 summit in Bali

Heads of State attending the Gala Dinner of the High Level Conference (Summit) G20 in Bali using a variety of typical Indonesian batik on Tuesday (11/15) evening.

As is often the case at summit meetings in general, they wore clothes that showed respect for the host. In this case, a long-sleeved batik shirt colored with floral or plant motifs.

Although diverse, there are dominant colors among the leaders namely, red, purple and blue.

Many high-ranking officials in Western countries use red or red-colored batik, for example British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who use fuchsia red.

Britain and Canada maintain friendly diplomatic relations, the two leaders even had a meal together in a restaurant in Bali.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian Minister Sergei Lavrov used purplish batik. Moscow maintains close ties with Beijing.

Xi uses a purple batik with a floral pattern, while Lavrov also uses a similar color and a larger floral pattern.

India’s prime minister also wears a purple batik shirt to reflect the country’s recent closeness to Russia and China, though he still doesn’t steer clear of the United States and Western countries.

South China Morning Post depicts some color similarity among the rulers as if reflecting their political alliances.

Hong Kong media also described US President Joe Biden’s absence from the evening banquet as a way to avoid a fashion faux pas.

They also comment on the costumes of the leaders of the most fashionable countries in the world. French President Emmanuel Macron instead wore a white shirt paired with trousers.

Despite growing tensions between world leaders, they have ruled out dining out.
