Qatar 2022 World Cup Venue: Al Thumama Stadion

Al Thumama Stadium uses the design of the gahfiya, a traditional Arabic woven hat.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, Al Thumama Stadium was inaugurated on October 22, 2021 when it hosted the Qatar Emir Cup Final between Al Sadd and Al Rayyan. The stadium’s design depicts the gahfiya, the traditional woven hat worn by men and boys across the Middle East.

Gahfiya forms the base layer of a region’s traditional attire. It is also a symbol of dignity and independence.

The stadium has a capacity of 40,000, which will be reduced to meet local needs and provide quality sports facilities for developing countries. The remaining 20,000 seats will be used for football events and other sporting activities.

According to FIFA+, a sports clinic will be opened there, as well as a boutique hotel, which will replace the stadium’s upper stands. The area around the stadium will become a community center with facilities for a variety of sports including handball, volleyball, basketball and swimming. Running and cycling tracks will also be created around the area, also providing an outlet for athletes and sportswomen from all walks of life.

There will also be a number of commercial and retail units created to ensure the area becomes a bustling sports and activity hub after world Cup end.
