Watch Indonesia’s Independence Day celebrations in Canada and Japan

Today, it is exactly 77 years since Indonesia gained its independence. Indonesia’s Independence Day, which falls every August 17, is always filled with flag ceremonies and various lively competitions.

If Indonesian Independence Day is celebrated in such a lively way, what about Indonesian Independence Day celebrations in other countries?

Not a few Indonesian citizens living abroad. One of them is Diah Ardani, an Indonesian citizen who lives in Quebec, Canada, who said that on August 17, a flag ceremony will be held at the Indonesian Embassy in Ottawa. Once the ceremony is over, there will be children’s games and lunch.

“During the pandemic, we cannot gather together, this year the Indonesian Embassy in Ottawa also invited the Indonesian people in Ottawa to attend the ceremony as well as gatherings, last year there were none,” Diah said when contacted. Voice SurabayaWednesday (8/17/2022).

Although still being celebrated in a pandemic atmosphere, he hopes that all citizens in Indonesia and abroad are still in good condition.

“I hope everyone can stay healthy, the pandemic can pass soon, I hope Indonesia can be better, more stable, and Indonesians who migrate abroad can easily reunite with their families in Indonesia,” Diah said.

The independence ceremony held in Canada is different from that in Japan. Dwi Retno Wahyuningtyas, an Indonesian citizen who lives in Tokyo, Japan, explained that the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo held a virtual flag ceremony today.

“Earlier I checked the social media of the Indonesian Embassy including YouTube, they organized some kind of cone cup and only a few guests were present, those who were heavily involved in the activities of the Indonesian embassy,” Dwi said when contacted. Voice SurabayaWednesday (8/17/2022).

Dwi said there was no special competition for independence in Japan. This caused him to miss typical independence competitions such as cracker-eating competitions, sack races, and hulahops. (gat/faz)
