Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand said the mission was aimed at ensuring that Ukrainians fleeing war receive the best possible support.
“Our military will continue to improve and provide safe haven and welcome with open arms all refugees from the Ukrainian people,” Anand Trenton military base said on Thursday (4/14), as published by Radio Canada.
Anand revealed that he had sent at least 150 troops to join the mission, but only around 100 would be deployed for now.
They are intended to facilitate the evacuation process, as well as to provide medical support services.
Canadian Press reports, troops will be deployed from Canadian Forces Base Trenton, and last week the team advance traveled to Poland to follow the situation of the mission.
According to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 2.6 million refugees have fled Ukraine to Poland since Russia launched its invasion in late February. Poland has by far the largest number of refugees hosted by neighboring Ukraine.
Since the start of the war, Canada has provided the Ukrainian government with millions of dollars in loans in the form of weapons and military equipment.
Canada has also sanctioned hundreds of Russian political and business leaders and asked the International Criminal Court to investigate the country for war crimes and crimes against humanity, particularly in the Bucha incident.
