In their first meeting, the Canadians took 2 hours 11 minutes to overcome the 16th seed, Kvitova.

“The first set seemed to go through me,” confesses Andreescu. “Petra shot very hard and her serve was very effective. I felt my emotions improving towards the end of the first set. But I got up.”

“I just wanted to play him as much as possible, use the serve to my advantage and just put the pressure on his return. I think I did very well. Just fight, compete very well.”

With this victory, the Canadian tennis player dashed the hopes of the Czech tennis player, Kvitova, to qualify for the WTA Finals. The winner of the 2011 WTA Finals season must advance to the Guadalajara Open final to have a chance of qualifying for the season-ending tournament for the eighth time.

After the first set, the Canadian dominated the returns. In the second set, she found an impressive forehand to force Kvitova into mistakes, including on her third set point chance.

The 2019 US Open champion was also unstoppable in the third set and Kvitova’s forehand return tucked into the net on the Canadian’s fifth match point chance.

For a spot in the quarterfinals, Andreescu will face third seed Jessica Pegula or Kazakhs Elena Rybakina.

2022 Wimbledon champion Rybakina advanced to the second round after knocking out former world number 1 Karolina Pliskova 7-6, 6-2 in 76 minutes. The Kazakhstan national has now won two encounters against compatriot Kvitova in straight sets.

Rybakina came back from a 3-5 lead in the first set before forcing a tiebreaker. She took a 5/2 lead before Pliskova equalized 5/5. But the Kazakh forced the Czech to blunder to earn a set point at 6/5 before winning the first set.

Unlike the first set, Rybakina got through the second set more easily.
