Bisnis.comJAKARTA – The Costa Rica national team has been listed as the last team to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar from the Concacaf zone.
Costa Rica qualified for the 2022 World Cup after beating New Zealand in the play-offs on June 14. In the match held at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, Doha, Costa Rica with the score 1-0 thanks to Joel Campbell’s goal.
“We qualified because we are a great team with great players and excellent technical staff. Because we are a family. Because we are a very compact group. Because we deserve it. We are very happy to arrived in Qatar,” Campbell said after securing his country a place at the 2022 World Cup.
The team nicknamed Los Ticos had to go through the playoffs to be sure of playing in the final of the 2022 World Cup. In the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, the Concacaf Costa Rica zone could only finish at the fourth place behind Canada, the United States and Mexico, three teams that had the right to qualify directly for the Qatar tournament.
Bryan Ruiz from Costa Rica added: “We know some things have to change but the important thing is to qualify and we celebrate. It was the fruit of months of hard work. We all suffered a lot. It was difficult “But we are at the World Cup. Third FIFA in a row for the first time in the history of Costa Rica, and we will do our best in Qatar 2022.”
Costa Rica at the World Cup
Since the late 1980s, the Costa Rica national team has continued to be considered a highly competitive team. At its peak, they qualified for the 1990 World Cup in Italy and qualified from the group stage under the Brazilian national team. They also qualified for the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups.
In 2014, Costa Rica reached their best form in football history. They were able to qualify for the knockout stage after facing three strong countries: Uruguay, Italy and England.
In the Round of 16, they beat Greece 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw until extra time. In this game, Keylor Navas saved more than 15 shots. They reached the quarter-finals for the first time but lost to the Netherlands, also on penalties (3–4).
Finally, their 2018 World Cup ended early. In the group stage, they were only able to pick up a single point thanks to a 2-2 draw against Switzerland.
The 2022 edition will be Costa Rica’s sixth World Cup. They made their debut in the quadrennial world soccer tournament in 1990. Costa Rica’s best achievement was reaching the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup.
After the draw for the final phase of the 2022 World Cup, Costa Rica is in Group E with Germany, Japan and Spain. The group is not easy for Costa Rica, especially since Germany and Spain have experienced the world title.
Coach and players
Behind the key to Costa Rica’s success is coach Luis Fernando Suarez Guzman. The 62-year-old coach was officially named Costa Rica’s architect on June 1, 2021.
Luis Fernando has experience coaching Americas teams like Ecuador. Under the tutelage of this Colombian coach, Costa Rica recorded 12 wins, 4 draws and five defeats.
One of the Costa Rican players who became you is Keylor Navas. The player who plays as a goalkeeper has exploits with major European clubs. Played with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). He managed to give away three Ligue 1 trophies. The 35-year-old goalkeeper won one La Liga title, three Champions League trophies with Real Madrid.
Fernandez Suarez’s decision to call up Navas and another veteran player, Bryan Ruiz, was key to Costa Rica’s success in Qatar. “I had to persuade them to stay and play the World Cup again and I’m glad I did. There are a lot of people who criticize that, but they are an important part of this team’s success.”
