19 countries reject Uyghur debate motion at UN Human Rights Council

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, GENEVA – The United Nations Human Rights Council on Thursday (6/10/2022) rejected a Western-led motion to hold a debate on alleged human rights abuses by the United Nations. Despite findings by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in August that crimes against humanity may have been committed in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, there are no consensus among member states of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

Activists and human rights organizations have reacted strongly to the developments within the council.
