Canada is the next country to declare a diplomatic boycott of the Games Olympic Beijing, China.
In a press release, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Canada a country that has brought human rights abuses to light.
“Like many of (our) partners around the world, we are deeply concerned about the Chinese government’s repeated human rights abuses,” Trudeau said Wednesday.
With this decision, Canada will not send diplomatic representatives to the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics in 2022.
“We announced today that we will not be sending diplomatic representatives to the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics this winter.” Trudeau continued.
However, Trudeau assured that Canadian athletes will continue to compete in this world’s biggest sporting event.
Canada’s decision comes a day after the United States made a similar decision. The United States highlighted China’s “genocide” against the Uyghur minority in the Xinjiang region and other human rights abuses.
After the United States, Australia and Britain also declared a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics.
The boycott drew criticism from China. Beijing sees American behavior as a form of ideological prejudice.
“The United States will suffer the consequences. Wait,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, quoted by AFP on Tuesday 07/12.
