Badminton News: Canada maintained their status as the region’s top men’s team by winning their third straight M&F Pan Am Cup on Sunday (20/2).
In the last match which took place in Acapulco, Mexico, they fell behind twice before beating Brazil again with a tight score of 3-2.
The Brazilian got off to a good start thanks to world number 52 Ygor Coelho, who beat top-ranked Brian Yang 15-21, 21-10 and 21-14 in the first men’s singles.
BR Sankeerth brought Canada to the level after a 77-minute marathon with a 23-25, 22-20, 22-20 victory over Jonathan Matias.
Donnians Oliveira returned the initiative to South America, after another three-game battle that saw them win 21-19, 18-21 and 21-13 against Victor Lai.
The next two doubles encounters were less demanding.
Yang joined Nyl Yakura and defeated Fabricio and Francielton Farias 21-17 and 21-19.
Kevin Lee keviand Ty Alexander Lindeman then cruised to a 21-18, 21-9 win over Matias and pom Artur Silva Pomoceno to give Canada the title and bragging rights for at least two more years.
Canada, however, missed the opportunity to tie the title in the women’s team as their side lost 3-0 to the United States in the final the day before.
The success ended America’s losing streak by the same scoreline to their opponents in the last two title games (2018, 2020). Their previous continental crown came in 2016.
The two champions also secured their spot in the TotalEnergies BWF Thomas and Uber Cup 2022 Finals in Bangkok, Thailand next May.
