6 people injured in refinery explosion in Newfoundland Canada

Jakarta

Federal Police Canada says that the refinery on the Atlantic island of Newfoundland has exploded. The incident injured six people.

According to AFP, this incident happened on Friday (2/9), local time. Police Corporal Jolene Garland said emergency crews responded to a “minor explosion” shortly after 4 p.m. (6.30 p.m. GMT) at the Come By Chance facility, 150 kilometers (90 miles) from St. John’s on the southeast side of the island.

“Six people were injured in the blast, one of them seriously injured,” Garland told AFP.

The cause of the explosion has not been determined. The oil refinery is controlled by a private United States (US) company.

According to public broadcaster CBC, the former North Atlantic refinery was renamed Braya Renewable Fuels after US private equity firm Cresta Fund Management acquired a majority stake last year.

When the deal was announced in November 2021, Cresta said the plant would employ at least 200 workers.
